Ayurveda is a pristine science of bringing your body, mind and soul in harmony that was born in India. In fact, it is one of the oldest forms of medical literature that has stood the test of time for more than 5000 years. This ancient healthcare system focuses on life, longevity and your overall well-being – be it physical, mental or spiritual. In his book, ‘Ayurvedic Home Remdies’, Dr. Vasant Lad explains. ‘As a science of self-healing, Ayurveda encompasses diet and nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, rest and relaxation, meditation, breathing exercises and medicinal herbs, along with cleansing and rejuvenation programs.”

Simply put, it is a holistic approach to a healthier and longer life – the kind that our ancestors lived. It is based on three key concepts which are Nidana (the diagnostic measures), Ahar (food that acts as internal medicine) and Kaya Chikitsa (body treatment). If you’re new it or are still figuring it out, we’ve unearthed some hidden secretes of Ayurveda that can help you tread the healthy way. Scientific Testing for Ayurveda

Since the beginning of this year, the current government has consistently been pushing the promotion and use of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy medicines. They are commonly known as AYUSH or Indian medicines. The celebration of International Yoga Day with much fanfare is a case in point. But the recent set of ‘Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Guidelines for clinical trials in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani (ASU) medicines’ released by the Ministry of Ayush for public comments until 15 September could be crucial for Indian medicines to be scientifically accepted as alternatives to Western medicine. The Guidelines have been prepared incorporating inputs from Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), Central Drug Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), Central Councils for research in ASU systems and even representatives of ASU drug manufacturing industries.

Get Rid of Digestive Issues with Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a goldmine of remedies that promise a cure for some of our everyday health woes. The age-old science comes studded with the discovery and exploration of rare and potent ingredients and herbs. These are often teamed with many commonly available items to create healing, health-benefitting concoctions. Triphala churna has existed in the Ayurvedic repertoire for centuries now. The churna is a mix of amla(Indian gooseberry) powder with two other fruits that are dried and powdered. Ayurveda recommends taking equal quantities of amla powder, bibhitaki – alternatively known as terminalia bellirica or bahera – and hartaki also known as harad to create Triphala.

“Pregnant women are usually kept off laxatives or the associated ingredients during the first two trimesters of their pregnancy. Triphala should therefore be avoided. Consult your doctor or medical expert before consuming it in any form,” concluded Dr. Gautam.
