Most Ayurveda Herbs are Sourced from Forests

A majority of medicinal trees, herbs and plants are found only inside forests, said managing director of Arya Vaidya Pharmacy Dr P R Krishnakumar on Thursday.

Krishnakumar said the correct combinations of herbs and their preparation could make them as effective as western medicine in treating many ailments affecting the human body.

Director of the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) R S Prashanth said, “India has 45,000 plant species but their utility is yet to be researched and found out. The active ingredients of those indigenous plants are not known much.”

Study indicates that Panchakarma reduces heart disease risk

A Study published in the journal Scientific Reports  says that Panchakarma programme reduces heart disease risk.

“It appears that a one-week Panchakarma programme can significantly alter the metabolic profile of the person undergoing it,” said senior author Deepak Chopra, Professor at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and a noted proponent of integrative medicine.

The findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, represent an attempt to use metabolic biomarkers to assess the reported health benefits of integrative medicine and holistic practices …Read More.

Panchakarma actually is a group of treatments, five in number, all of which are not commonly practised in all diseases. The panchakarmaare vamana, virechana, snehavasti, kashayavasti and nasya. Vamana is emesis, virechana is purging, vasti is enema, which of two kinds done with medicated oils and medicated decoctions and is called snehavasti and kashayavasti respectively. Detoxify the Effects of Drugs through Ayurveda

Detoxification and ‘panchkarma’ specialist Richa Tripathi stated that panchakarma is a bio-purification method for detoxification of bodies through five phases. These five phases are vamana, virechana, basti, nasya and raktamokshana. Vamana is the process of inducing controlled vomiting in order to flush out harmful toxins from the body. Virechana or therapeutic purgation involves cleansing of gastrointestinal tract, especially liver.
